Sheila Symingtons work is underpinned by a strong sense of composition and by her wonderful ability to draw well. Whether looking at one of her paintings in a realist style or those that are purely abstract, one can't help but notice the deft manner in which she handles the painting's boundaries. Both her compositions and her quality of line tend to be clean and uncluttered by unecessary trappings.
Her current abstracts combine areas of texture with areas of colour. The texture is produced either by using pages of text or outside imagery that is torn or cut, then over layered with translucent passages of transparant gel. Sheila then uses blocks of strong colour or blacks, to create an architecture armature for the texture to move about in. As a result, the viewers eye finds a very satisfying interplay of strength and delicacy in Symington's works.
